OVERALL PURPOSE OF THIS ROLE

The President/CEO leads, manages and directs the total operation for the United Way of Northwest Louisiana (UWNWLA) and is responsible for the organization’s mission.  Working with the Board of Directors and other constituents, the President/CEO will develop strategic short- and long- term goals for UWNWLA and will lead the organization toward advancing its mission by creating new and innovative community partnerships, programs and revenue sources. 

 

The President/CEO will manage all operations and activities, including providing direction to staff and ensuring proper fiscal and operational management. The scope of this position is broad, requiring the President/CEO to establish and maintain significant relationships with persons at all levels within the public, private and nonprofit sectors.  These individuals include corporate chief executives, local government leaders, labor representatives, leaders of other funding organizations, key planning organizations, agencies and representatives of other United Way organizations (both local, state and national).  The President/CEO is responsible for building trust and stewardship of the brand and its relevance throughout Northwest Louisiana.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

The President/CEO will have extensive experience in the management of organizations of comparable size and mission.  The individual will possess sufficient expertise on issues relevant to the organization to make well-informed mission related decisions, and command the confidence and respect of stakeholders necessary to serve as the leader of the organization.

  • 10+ years executive level leadership/management experience of a complex nonprofit organization or with considerable interaction with the nonprofit sector.
  • An advanced degree or equivalent experience
  • Computer literate, proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office Suite, and database such as Enterprise.
  • Proven ability to lead a highly motivated, experienced senior leadership team
  • Displays strong cognitive skills (written and oral communications, logic, interpersonal, judgment, team work, mobility, and manual dexterity).
  • Successful track record in diverse fundraising programs
  • Successful track record in management, including financial management, human resources, budgeting, contract administration, and strategic planning
  • Proven ability to network, develop and maintain relationships with community representatives, business executives, foundation officials, donors and the media.
  • Results-oriented and personally accountable for expectations, timelines and measures.
  • Competence of the field of marketing, public relations and social media
  • Sets own work hours and be able to work outside the 8am to 5pm workday and weekends as required.
  • Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires packaging and delivering campaign supplies and participating in campaign presentations as well as off-site events.  The following are required, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing allowing for effective communication in person, electronically or by phone.
  • Sufficient vision to prepare, review, and file a variety of electronic and written documents
  • Sufficient personal mobility and manual dexterity which permits operation of a computer, periods of standing, walking, sitting and bending as necessary.
  • Sufficient ability to lift, carry and/or load up to 50 lbs.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The major responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:


Governance

  • Ensure Board members are kept informed of matters and developments that warrant their attention and best practices on organizational management and leadership
  • Report regularly to the Board on the activities of the organization and progress toward meeting annual strategic goals.
  • Develop board meetings that allow the members to fulfill their operational responsibilities, but also to provide the opportunity for strategic discussion on organizational imperatives
  • Work closely with the Executive Assistant to ensure timely release of agendas and notifications are sent monthly to board members
  • Identify issues and policies that require the action of the Board
  • Develop and staff the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and other task forces and committees as appropriate
  • Maintain membership requirements with United Way Worldwide and Louisiana Association of United Ways.

 

Ensures that the Board has access to all information needed to carry out its governance responsibilities, to fully understand issues that impact the service area, trends in philanthropy and other information to support decisions regarding the direction of UWWC.


Strategic

  • Work with the Board to develop and monitor the annual strategic planning process
  • Provide vision and strategic insight to the Board for fulfilling the mission of the organization, utilizing input from multiple sources, including external and internal constituents
  • Develop priorities for program activities in a manner that is consistent with the strategic plan and intent of the Board
  • Ensure that the Board has access to all information needed to carry out its governance responsibilities, to fully understand issues that impact the service area, trends in philanthropy and other information to support decisions regarding the direction of UWNWLA
  • Develop effective, state-of-the-art marketing strategies that position UWNWLA as a regional leader for achieving community impact
  • Identify new opportunities to build partnerships with a broad and diverse group of external constituents and leverage resources in an effort to maximize impact
  • Partner with external organizations to encourage the exchange of information and the building of collaborations
  • Participate in external meetings, councils, forums, etc. to insure we have the most current and relevant information to use in decision making
  • Support an organizational culture of integrity, transparency and service

 

Community Leadership

  • Advance the mission and image of the organization by serving as the chief representative to all internal and external stakeholders, including the Board, staff, local nonprofits, donors, the media, the government and the general public
    • Represent the interests of all health and human service nonprofits through advocacy efforts designed to educate corporate and government representatives on community needs
    • Maintains a working knowledge of the economic and social forces related to the community.
    • Champion innovative approaches towards solving community issues
    • Oversee all program initiatives and activities, including monitoring their performance and providing oversight and guidance.
    • Convene and lead donor, volunteer, community partner and staff discussions regarding strategic, operations, and tactical issues
    • Provide leadership in response to local, state or national disasters/crisis situations


Resource Development:

  • Work with the Vice President of Resource Development to establish annual financial development goals and monitor with the Board of Directors
  • Work with the Vice President of Resource Development to secure new gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and civic organizations.
  • Provide leadership in developing creative strategies and plans for achieving financial goals, and assure appropriate staffing of the campaign
  • Networks and develops relationships with the corporate community and maintains ongoing contact with others at different levels inside and outside the organization.
  • Identify and develop new sources for revenue generation.
  • Oversee campaign auditing and reporting to external auditor(s) and/or United Way Worldwide.
  • Charged to drive key results in fundraising.
  • Provides leadership in developing the financial resources to help meet the human service needs of the community.
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and key leaders of prospective new corporate partners.
  • Leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising opportunities.
  • Oversees all corporate and individual relationships and fundraising strategies.
  • Promotes a culture of fundraising in the organization, both at the staff and Board level.


Community Impact:

  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of UWNWLA.
  • Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the Board.
  • Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve quality.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs, initiatives and services, including the community impact grants process.
  • Facilitate periodic community assessment to identify specific issues to address.
  • Monitor the mobilization of community resources and activities.
  • Build and participate in appropriate boards, task forces, coalitions, committees.
  • Develops effective marketing strategies that position UWWC as a community leader for achieving impact.
  • Partners with external organizations to encourage the exchange of information and the building of collaborations.

 

Administrative

  • Review and set operational policies for the organization, and ensure consistent and proper execution
  • Establish the culture and programs to ensure that the organization attracts and retains the talent necessary to successfully carry out its programs and mission.
  • Create an atmosphere that fosters the development of strong, effective teams and empowers staff through involvement and participation in decision making
  • Staff the organization with fully competent, diverse professionals and delegate responsibilities/authority. 
  • Promote continued professional development among staff and demonstrate and assure cultural competency of staff
  • Develops organization’s annual operation budget and provides the fiscal and financial reporting oversight ensuring the organization operates within the financial parameters set by the Board.
  • Oversee internal accounting controls; ensure that financial reporting, audit and 990 reports are handled timely, accurate and with complete disclosure.
  • Maintain a balanced operation budget and see that available resources are distributed appropriately through a community impact grants process
  • Maintain knowledge relative to human resources best practices for on-boarding and separation of staff.
  • Assist in the recruitment, interviewing and selection of staff, ensuring they have the right technical and personal abilities to help further the organization's mission.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations and uncover training needs for all senior management staff
  • Monitor job responsibilities and duties
  • Coach and mentor staff as appropriate to improve performance.
  • Oversee the progressive discipline process administered to the staff to ensure that the appropriate and legally defensible procedures are followed.


General

  • Represents United Way of Northwest Louisiana professionally and enthusiastically serving as a spokesperson and ambassador.
  • Models compliance with UW policies and procedures and values.
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization.
  • Ensures during times of staff vacancy or leave, measures are taken to cover priority work plans.
  • Authorizes all technology purchases/acquisitions.
  • Write solicitation and acknowledgement letters, meeting memos and general correspondence.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Attends scheduled meetings and trainings to continuously learn and update skills.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned by Board Chair.


PERFORMANCE MEASURING

  • Understandable and correct financial reporting

  • Annual review will happen in April with the rest of staff. The Board Chair will conduct review

 

Key Performance Indicators

  • Increased fund raising, including but not limited to, annual workplace campaign, small business and residential campaigns, planned and deferred giving and other sources yet to be identified.
  • Increased giving from high net worth individuals (major gifts) and private foundations.
  • Increased "pool" of non-traditional donors to expand the scope of fund raising.
  • Stewardship and accountability for overall operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within the guidelines of the Standards of Excellence and the policies set by the Board of Directors.
  • Assure that current technology is sufficient for this highly competitive fund-raising environment.
  • Integration of effective and efficient support systems in areas such as staff and volunteer training, procurement, personnel, information management and building management.
  • Assessment of community needs and identification of appropriate roles for United Way in addressing them.
  • Assures implementation and utilization of performance planning and evaluation systems for all United Way employees.
